Alstom has been awarded a contract to supply 90 Adessia Stream commuter trains to local rail passenger transport authorities go.Rheinland and Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) for operation in the S-Bahn Cologne network in Germany.
The contract, valued at over EUR 4 billion, is Alstom's largest order in Germany to date and includes a long-term full-service agreement for the trains’ maintenance over 34 years. The contract details two versions of the train: a shorter nine-car version nearly 150 meters long and a longer 11-car version almost 170 meters long. These trains, designed to accommodate both short-haul and long-distance passengers, offer a mix of flexible modules providing optimal standing room and seating. The shorter and longer versions can hold over 1,150 and 1,340 passengers respectively, both with a maximum speed of 140 km/h. Michael Vogel, Managing Director of go.Rheinland, stated, "We have commissioned a completely newly developed vehicle tailored to our region's needs, raising the S-Bahn fleet to a new level."
The new Adessia Stream trains feature amenities such as Wi-Fi, power sockets, powerful air conditioning with environmentally friendly refrigerants, and specially treated windows for better mobile reception. Each car includes multi-purpose areas for prams and bicycles, and gap-bridging devices for level access. These are the first S-Bahn trains in Germany equipped with toilets, including facilities for passengers with reduced mobility. Maintenance of these trains will be performed in modern depots in the Cologne area, incorporating preventive, corrective, and predictive maintenance to ensure high vehicle availability and cost-efficiency.
